Men tell nada on Bachelorette but here’s a free cruise

Monday’s “The Bachelorette: Men Tell All” not only jumped the shark — it climbed on its back and did laps in a pool of man tears and pasta sauce.

What the hell was that?

It’s not that I was expecting fireworks. The men got along too well for that, plus the two contestants who displayed the most misogynistic behaviour — Chris Austin and Hayden Markowitz — were absent.

But I wasn’t expecting the usual inanities to be padded with so much filler, including a promo for Virgin Voyages, complete with free champagne and free cruises for everyone in the audience; an extended promo for “Bachelor in Paradise” with four cast members invited to the hot seat; an even more extended promo for the gay rom-com “Bros” with stars Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane onstage, culminating in Meatball dumping a giant jar of pasta sauce all over himself — because it wasn’t gross enough when he did it earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, poor Aven’s hometown date — “unfinished business,” as host Jesse Palmer called it — got 13 or 14 minutes at the top of the episode before the show moved on to, well, not much of anything.

Aven and Rachel get a love spell in the Crow Haven Corner witch shop.

About Aven’s date with Rachel in Salem, Massachusetts: naturally there had to be something witchcraft-related, so we had a segment involving a “love witch” named Lorelei (with the best accent ever) casting a love spell for Aven and Rachel that ended with the table top and candles sliding to the floor. A bad omen? Not for the meet-the-parents part of the date.

Rachel, still smarting from last week‘s smackdown from Tino’s parents, was nervous that Aven’s folks wouldn’t like her since they hadn’t been keen on his previous two girlfriends. But, unlike Joe and Sandi, A.J. and Dawn managed to ask Rachel tough questions without belittling her and her emotions.

Rachel reassured skeptical A.J. that she and Aven had talked about what real life would look like beyond the show, including raising kids and accommodating each other’s jobs. And when A.J. asked if she was “earnestly, sincerely, wholeheartedly ready to commit to love with Aven,” she answered honestly that she was not, although she did see a future with him.

Both A.J. and Dawn were sold. “Don’t stop fighting for her, man, because she’s a good catch,” A.J. told Aven.

Aven took the advice, telling Rachel he was falling in love with her, which seemed to delight her. She said in her voice-over that she felt like she was falling in love with Aven, too. “This could be my happy ending.”

We know that Aven at least made it to the fantasy suites, since Jesse told us that Rachel and Gabby each kept their remaining three men (Aven, Tino and Zach for Rachel; Erich, Jason and Johnny for Gabby) at the rose ceremony. No surprise there since there are always three fantasy suite dates, hence no need to send anyone home. But surely producers could have taken a couple of minutes away from shilling for Virgin or “Bros” to show us the rose ceremony.

What can I say about what happened after that?

Well, we had newly platinum blond Roby (insert your “Twilight”/”Harry Potter”/”House of the Dragon” reference here) acting like he’d been on the show for weeks instead of hours, chastising Meatball for rejecting Rachel’s rose then deciding he liked her after all. “If you’re more into Rachel, then say that, be that, do that, man up. Have some balls, Meatball!” (Do you think he rehearsed that?)

When Ethan tried to interject and Roby told him to shut the fuck up, Ethan put him in his place: ” You were there at the mansion for four hours for a reason, have some respect for the rest of us who had genuine feelings,” i.e. don’t be a baby back bitch!

Logan Palmer in the luke warm seat on “Men Tell All.”

With neither Chris nor Hayden there to fall on their swords — “cowardly,” Mario said of Hayden’s absence — we had to settle for the other men rehashing what they said and did. But Logan was there, trying to look contrite so we won’t all hate him when we see him on “Paradise.”

Blah, blah, blah, Logan was following his heart. He didn’t intentionally mislead Rachel. He wasn’t sorry he pursued Gabby; he just wished he’d done it in “a more graceful way.”

Not a word was spoken about how he became the only one of the men to get COVID-19 on the cruise ship (allegedly) and why he disappeared without an exit interview.

And then we had the Virgin Voyages plug and the cruise giveaway that Jesse said was “going to change your lives forever.” It’s a vacation, Jesse. At least Oprah gave her audience cars, which could in theory be life-changing.

Jesse gave Nate Mitchell a chance to address social media allegations of being a playa.

Next up, Nate got the “new Bachelor” edit.

Look, I really enjoyed Nate on the show. I was sorry he got sent home. And he was a model of empathetic, emotionally intelligent manhood in his time in the hot seat with Jesse. But is that enough to overcome the taint of a cheating accusation on social media? I’m not convinced.

“Real men hold other men accountable,” Nate said of Chris earlier in the show. Jesse duly asked Nate to address the social media allegations that a) he kept his daughter a secret from a woman he had an 18-month relationship with and b) he dated two women at once.

Nate blamed the trauma of his divorce for him wanting to protect his daughter from “the instability of my dating life” and said he was “deeply sorry for the way I acted” in the case of the two women, adding, “I pray that you forgive the man that I was because I’m not that same person.”

I would have loved a deeper dive into that apology. How unstable was his dating life? What made him change? Did he get therapy? But nah, got to make sure we have enough time for games with the cast of “Bros.”

Next we had the “Bachelor in Paradise” promo, with cast members Serene (Clayton’s season), Genevieve (ditto), Victoria (Peter’s season) and Andrew (Katie’s season) there to assure that it really will be “the most dramatic season” ever. I’m still pissed that Shanae will be there but OK, fine, I’ll be watching.

Gabby Windey and Rachel Recchia, still as close-knit as ever.

Finally, Rachel and Gabby made their appearance. Their friendship continues to be the best thing about this season.

Sure, Gabby put Mario in his place when he suggested she did him wrong; Jordan V absolved Rachel of any guilt over sending him home on their first date; Gabby accepted an apology from a choked up Jacob for telling her he would have gone home if she was the only woman there; Rachel got a tepid non-apology from Logan and was assured of the undying admiration of hometown castoff Tyler, who told her she did everything “perfectly”; and Gabby commended Nate for being “a leader for all the men and for how well you treat women.” (Another sign that Nate is likely going to be the next Bachelor.)

But Gabby’s and Rachel’s obvious affection and respect for each other was the real payoff. “You need to know just how proud I am of the two of you,” Jesse told them, which was the most sensible thing he said all night.

Finally, Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane took the stage to promote their movie “Bros.” Billy, of course, is the dude who told Colton Underwood during his season he might be the “first gay Bachelor” a couple of years before Colton came out.

Jesse Palmer demonstrates the correct reaction to Meatball getting doused in pasta sauce . . . again.

Billy’s other moment of Bachelor franchise infamy involved presenting a special gift to Meatball of a giant jar of pasta sauce to pour over himself and then getting tackled by a slimy Meatball.

And if this franchise thinks stupid stunts like that are what the show’s fans want, shark-jumping is going to be a regular occurrence.

We continue to plod toward what Jesse claims is going to be a “shocking ending nobody is gonna see coming.” But first, fantasy suites and more tears.

A Bachelorette favourite leaves and overshadows ‘Men Tell All’

Forget the shenanigans of “The Men Tell All” — Cody who? Karl blah blah blah — the only thing of note that happened on Monday’s “Bachelorette” was that Michael Allio took himself out of the running and broke many, many hearts.

I should have seen it coming when the episode began with a time-wasting chat about hometowns between Katie and co-host Tayshia Adams, and Katie said she was excited about potentially choosing Michael and becoming an “instant mom” to his son. It’s called foreshadowing, folks. It’s like when the dudes who freak out that they’re not getting picked at the rose ceremony get their names called and the ones who yammer on about how confident they are that they’re staying get sent home.

Michael himself was pumped about Katie meeting his parents, but then he made his daily video call to his little boy, James, and James said, “Maybe Daddy left because he don’t want to see me.” And Michael was crying and a producer was hugging him.

If Michael had stayed after that, then he wouldn’t be the man we’ve all grown to admire so much. He made the trek to Katie’s suite — thanks to those of you who pointed out she was wearing a special shade of breakup blue — and told her, “I’m not leaving because of you, I’m leaving because my son needs his dad.”

Katie, with tears rolling down her cheeks, said, “I want to beg you to stay. I just know that’s not an option.”

And they exchanged a couple of long hugs and a kiss and Michael was gone.

Who knows if Katie would have ended up with Michael had he stayed? She did say she saw them going to the end. But at “Men Tell All,” she made it clear there’d be no second chances.

Fan favourite Michael Allio with Tayshia and Kaitlyn on “Men Tell All.”

Michael had told Tayshia and co-host Kaitlyn Bristowe that he’d “100 per cent” be willing to take another shot with Katie because he still felt the same way about her. But Katie had moved on: “I have nothing but love and respect for Michael, but ultimately I could not dwell on the past,” she said. “My ending is ultimately how everything was supposed to happen.”

So Michael for Bachelor then? It could happen, but only if he was allowed to bring his son along. To me, it seemed like Andrew Spencer got more of a Bachelor edit on “Men Tell All.”

After revisiting his exit from the show — with nothing but good things to say about Katie — Andrew told Tayshia and Kaitlyn, “I’m still waiting for someone to just, you know, pick me for me, pick me for 100 per cent me.”

There was a definite potential Bachelor vibe around Andrew Spencer on “Men Tell All.”

Tayshia brought up the conversation that Andrew and Katie had on their one-on-one date about interracial relationships, saying “You were so courageous for talking about that.”

“Me being a Black man, I’m not afraid of shouldering or having to bear that,” Andrew replied.

Was Tayshia laying the groundwork for a Bachelor season in which Andrew would be dating white women again? Perhaps. She also told him, “You said you want to be chosen and you will.”

I honestly half expected her to introduce him as the next Bachelor at that point.

The one fly in the ointment are problematic tweets of Andrew’s that have surfaced. One post I saw described them as “misogynistic, fatphobic or racially insensitive.” So nothing’s in the bag just yet.

As for the rest of “The Men Tell All,” holy filler Batman!

I love Kaitlyn and Jason Tartick as a couple, but why were we watching a video of then getting engaged, which had nothing to do with Katie’s season? That segment about the men trash-talking each other on the stupid bash ball date? Waste of time. And revisiting the ridiculous WOWO challenge? Really?

I’m not going to talk about Aaron’s feud with Cody. I couldn’t even remember who Cody was until I was reminded in the highlight reel and I couldn’t give a crap why he was on the show.

As for Karl? Same old, same old. He now claims that when he told Katie that multiple men weren’t there for the right reasons he was really talking about Thomas but didn’t want to rat him out by naming him. Whatever dude.

The one notable thing about Karl’s time in the spotlight is that it gave Brendan more screen time than he had the entire season. Karl said Brendan, who’s Canadian, “only showed up for a free ticket to the United States so he could have free beer for the whole trip.” Brendan called Karl a snake and a scumbag. Karl told Brendan to shut the fuck up. Brendan accused Karl of spreading “fake news.” At one point they stood toe to toe as if things were going to get physical. They did not, we moved on.

There was some chat about Thomas and whether he was actually a “bad guy,” and then the talk moved to Hunter, who admitted that yes, he told a fib when he said he didn’t have a top four list, but he wasn’t lying about falling in love with Katie and . . . does anyone else find this tedious?

Speaking of villain Thomas, he wasn’t there in person but appeared on a video call and seemed like he was still campaigning to be the Bachelor. He apologized for taking attention away from Katie and the “amazing guys in the room,” and he said his life had been “transformed” by his time with Katie, without explaining what that meant. Yawn.

And finally, let’s talk about Connor, a.k.a. the Cat. Did some random woman really pop up in the audience to tell Connor he couldn’t possibly be a “bad kisser”?

Connor kisses a woman named Tara to the surprise of Tayshia and Kaitlyn.

Even if she wasn’t a production plant, somebody must have known what she was going to do before she did it. It’s reality TV in name only, people.

The woman, who was named Tara, was invited onstage to kiss Connor and she told Tayshia and Kaitlyn it was an 11. And then they smooched again, as Andrew yelled “You’re a tiger! You’re a tiger!” at Connor, and Connor plucked a rose from the bouquet on the table and gave it to her.

Honestly, that’s the most interesting thing that happened on “Men Tell All” aside from the fact that there was a live audience in attendance, a lot smaller one than in the before times but still.

Let’s finish with Connor’s latest song, which ended with the catchy lyrics, “Katie, we’re lucky you gave all of us half a chance / But the guys on this season have got me believing in bromance.”

Next week, it’s back to the drama when I presume we’ll finally see the hometown dates, and Greg seems to be freaking out and Katie asks someone to book her a flight home.

The Bachelorette picks her final 4 and the Men Tell All, all in 1 night

Fasten your seatbelts, Bachelor Nation. With apologies for borrowing from Bette Davis, it looks like it’s going to be a bumpy ride, not to mention a really speedy one.

“The Bachelorette” crammed what would normally be two episodes worth of material into one on Monday night, including a “Men Tell All.” Hometown dates follow Tuesday. Next week is the two-part season finale, which presumably means fantasy suite dates on Dec. 21 and the proposal on Dec. 22.

It’s not quite Clare getting engaged to Dale fast, but it’s brisk.

Likewise, Tayshia Adams moved from dithering last week, so conflicted she couldn’t even hand out a group date rose, to extra decisive this week.

She let two men go ahead of the rose ceremony and then cancelled the cocktail party, so confident was she in her decisions. The final four are, in fact, no surprise. But let’s back up and recount how we got here.

First, there was Tayshia’s one-on-one date with Canadian wildlife manager Blake Moynes. Bachelor 101 says if you’re just getting your first real date the week before hometowns you’re probably a goner.

Tayshia and Blake meet with “Reiki and crystal master” Geeta.

Indeed, after an awkward and kind of pointless session with a “Reiki and crystal master” — which included the inevitable “tantric breathing exercise,” i.e. crotch meld, not to mention Blake getting visibly, er, “charged” — Tayshia felt that Blake wasn’t her “guy.” He didn’t even get a chance to pretend to eat dinner with her before she told him they should go their separate ways, with Tayshia crying buckets as she handed him into the SUV of Shame despite her certainty she was doing the right thing.

That certainty gave Tayshia “clarity” about someone else, so she headed to the suite where the men were hanging out and asked Riley to step outside.

Tayshia explained that she didn’t want to lead Riley on by meeting his family “if my heart is not 100 per cent matching yours.”

Riley, like the lawyer he is, put up a bit of an argument, asking “Why keep me around so long?”

The real answer is that it’s always about the numbers in “Bachelor” or “Bachelorette.” Guys get strung along week after week because the number of men need to match the number of roses.

Tayshia said that her breakthrough conversations with Riley, the ones in which he showed her who he really was, “started coming a little bit later.” And then Riley stopped resisting.

“I can argue all day, but in the end it doesn’t matter because the end result is the same. So the longer I sit here, the longer I look at you, the longer I hear you talk, see you smile, the more pain I feel.”

He left with grace and class and generosity, and Tayshia cried a lot.

I couldn’t help contrasting her emotional reaction to letting Riley go to her sangfroid when she jettisoned Bennett, and thinking how ridiculous it was that Bennett — after coming back to surprise Tayshia the week before — had been allowed to stay until the rose ceremony.

Tayshia gives Bennett the heave-ho the week before. I don’t see any tears, do you?

It was absolutely preposterous to think that Bennett, despite already being sent home once, would vault past men like Brendan and Zac and Ivan in Tayshia’s affections to claim a rose. Clearly his being allowed to return was nothing more than a stupid producer trick, a way to stir up a little crap among the men.

And indeed, the other men were visibly displeased when Bennett came strolling back in before the rose ceremony, looking like the cat that swallowed the canary. “You guys looks like you’ve seen a ghost,” Bennett cheerfully told Ben, Zac, Brendan, Ivan and Noah, before adding that he’d returned so he wouldn’t be written off as a “Harvard D-bag.”

Then, after all the nonsense about Tayshia feeling conflicted because Bennett told her he loved her, he didn’t even get to converse with her again before she gave roses to Zac, Ivan and Brendan (Ben already had one), dispatching Noah and Bennett.

I did feel bad for Riley, who seems like a good guy, but it had to be those four for hometowns given that they’re the men Tayshia had gotten closest to. If it wasn’t, it would have been quite the shocker.

Next it was time for a truncated “Men Tell All.”

The bad blood between Noah and Bennett was rehashed. Nothing new there. Noah accused Bennett of being condescending and conniving; Bennett accused Noah of creating all the drama. Riley sided with Noah, Kenny with Bennett. There was some shouting between Noah and Kenny, and Kenny had to be bleeped, and host Chris Harrison had to whistle to get them to simmer down. Bennett eventually apologized, but Noah told him he was “an ostentatious Harvard D-bag” and they’d never be friends.

That was small potatoes compared to the real D-bag in the room. Yosef Aborady returned to rehash his exit and his berating of first Bachelorette Clare Crawley over what he called the “classless” strip dodgeball date, which saw the losers of the game strip down to their man goodies (thanks Demar).

Yosef claimed he was “sticking up for these guys,” but Blake and Kenny, who’d both been starkers, said no thanks to that. Jason called Yosef out for being disrespectful to Clare and told him to “shut the fuck up” when Yosef tried to talk over Jason the same way he talked over Clare.

Asked by Harrison if he had any regrets, Yosef was adamant he did not.

“Just so we’re clear, when you watch that, you’re like that’s cool, I would never mind anyone talking to my daughter like that,” Harrison said.

“If my daughter did something like that I would hope somebody would call her out,” Yosef replied, which tells you pretty much everything you need to know right there.

I hope we never see that misogynistic creep on any Bachelor show ever again.

What a contrast between Yosef’s bullshit and Riley, who got emotional after watching tape of his breakup with Tayshia, telling her that despite the heartache, “I appreciate everything you did for me. I would not change this experience for anything in the world.”

Tayshia reassured Riley that he hadn’t scared her off by telling her about his past, which he said was “a weight off my chest.”

Tayshia also made Blake feel a little better, telling him she’d subconsciously put up walls to protect herself against him, knowing he’d had feelings for Clare.

“I’m glad now I can look at you with a smile and remember you like this and not like that,” Blake said, referring to their breakup. “That was brutal for the longest time.”

I know Harrison talks about the bloopers being the funniest part of “Men Tell All,” but what really made me laugh was he and Ed reliving their bromance, spawned when Ed went to the wrong suite while looking for Tayshia’s room at the resort.

“We had a good time, man,” Harrison said. “Just a couple of guys hanging out, having a nice bottle of wine.”

“It was pretty epic,” said Ed. “I’m somehow glad I wasn’t at Tayshia’s that night actually.”

Enjoy the laughs while you can. There were an awful lots of tears in the promo for the final three nights of the season.

The next episode airs Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Citytv.
