I’m a bit of an accidental TV journalist. I got my start in 2004 writing about “American Idol” for the Toronto Star, where I’ve been an editor since 1998. The TV writer at that time didn’t cover reality TV. Since I was already watching – and got my start in journalism as a writer back in 1984 – I stepped up. I was soon recapping regularly: “Idol,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” “Survivor,” and later “The Voice,” all things “Bachelor,” “The X Factor,” “The Amazing Race Canada,” “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” and so on. I no longer recap (other than “Bachelor” snark), but I have hung on to my “Realityeo” handle and expanded my writing to other kinds of TV. I still contribute articles to the Toronto Star under the byline Debra Yeo, but this is where I can muse on the TV I love, and share interviews, reviews and other stories that don’t make the pages of the Star.
